In 1912, the noted German scientist, Alfred Wegener devised a theory that the world's continents had once been joined together. He named this massive super continent "Pangaea". Despite the threat of war in the fall of 1939, the Germans decide to launch a sea expedition in search of evidence for Wegener's theory. Their voyage to the arctic island, Svalbard, is led by the German geologist, Friedrich (Axel Prahl), and his lovely assistant, Leni (Jeanette Hain). Joining them are three other renowned scientists, two Englishmen (Tom Burke and Allan Corduner) and a Swede, Gustav de Geer (Richard Ulfsäter), as well as the ship's Norwegian captain (Sven Nordin) and its Russian crew. Although the geologists embark enthusiastically on their research mission, the growing political tension between their countries soon affects their work. The voyage is further complicated when Gustav and Leni fall in love on the eve of Hitler's invasion of Poland. With Britain and France declaring war on Germany, the civilian scientists now find themselves mere pawns in a global power struggle...
