Based on the life of Daniel Decatur Emmett, who wrote the song 'Dixie', this almost-forgotten gem of a musical opens with Emmett (Bing Crosby) trying to make his way as a singer-songwriter in New Orleans. He teams up with accordion player Mr Bones (Billy de Wolfe) and the pair make their way to New York. When a music publisher begins showing an interest in Emmett's songs stardom appears to beckon, but does it do so at a price?
