It is the mid-1800s, and Russia is expanding southeastwards into the lands of the Chechen people. Jemal (John Drew Barrymore), son of Shamil (Edmund Purdom) the Chechen leader, is sent to Saint Petersburg as a hostage and guarantee of a temporary peace treaty. While there, Jemal sees the power of Russia and falls in love with a Russian woman. The film focuses on the strife between the Circassian Muslims, led by Shamil and Czar Alexander (Massimo Girotti). When Shamil wants to make war again for the freedom of his people, his son is torn between old family loyalties and his understanding that his father's nation cannot stand against the power of a country equipped with modern arms.

* THE COSSACKS is an extremely rare movie on DVD and very few prints exist. After an extensive search we found what we believe to be the best surviving English language elements. We are pleased to make this available here on DVD. The quality is not great - it is quite rough – and one should not expect state-of-the-art re-mastered quality - but it is a treasure for those who truly wish to see this wonderful, thoughtful historic film.
